At the September meeting of Botriphnie W.R.I. Mrs Lorna Milne, Vice President, welcomed members and after dealing with the business on hand, she introduced the speaker for the night Alice Banks who was demonstrating yarn spinning.
Alice has been spinning for 12-13 years learning most of her skills from her mother. She gave out a bundle of sheep's wool so that we could attempt to spin the yarn with our fingers as the first cavemen did in ancient times. The history and development of the spinning wheel from Greece to China, India & U.K was explained with Alice demonstrating at each stage. We were given the opportunity to try spinning with a variety of fibres and using a variety of techniques. Many different types of yarns are used, depending on country of origin e.g. camel, goat, sheep, dog, cat etc; as well as plant fibres such as flax. Jute and even nettles. Although the dyeing of wool is a chemical process, Alice uses many plants from her garden such as heathers, marigolds, carrots etc to give delicate shades. The finished yarn is used in knitting or to make rugs etc.
Mrs Lorna Milne thanked the speaker, for an interesting and enjoyable demonstration. She also gave a vote of thanks to the hostesses, Mrs M. Christie and Mrs D.Bremner for the lovely tea.
Competition Winners:

Agnes then introduced Elma Mc Hardy who guided us light heartedly through the creation of a floral arrangement for a corner. Elma gave useful tips for basic arranging for beginners, buying and preparing flowers and foliage, using triangular formation and a variety of foliage so that we all achieved reasonably pleasing results.
A tasty Tea was provided by Lorna Milne and Audrey Peddie and served buffet style so that we could mingle and chat, a very important part of a RURAL meeting, especially as we welcomed four new members. If you are reading this and you live anywhere near we would love to have you join us .You do not have to live in the countryside! Come as a visitor with a friend or contact a member.

The November meeting was chaired by Lorna Milne, Vice President, who welcomed an excellent turnout of members and guests. After the main items of business were dealt with, Lorna introduced Murial Barclay who invited us to participate in a 'hands on' craft demonstration making greetings cards. The method used is called "Spirelli" where thread is wound round the spokes of a wheel in a pattern to provide a decoration for a card. Although we all used the same pattern and the same material, because we had selected different colours the variation in results was amazing. Audrey Peddie gave the vote of thanks to the speaker for an enjoyable demonstration she also thanked hostesses Davina Gray and Lindsay Watt for supplying a lovely tea.

The December meeting was chaired by Agnes Riach, President, who welcomed an excellent turnout of members and guests. The accent was on 'good fun' as Mandy McWilliam and Sylvia Haider gave expert tuition on Swedish style exercise to a medley of Christmas songs. A slow warm-up was gradually speeded up until we were all enjoying a circular dance to "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer". During the floor exercises we were encouraged to use parts of our bodies many of us didn't realise we had. Then Sylvia led us through a series of exercises done sitting on a chair, thus allowing us to catch our breath, We cooled down with a series of stretches to the lovely tones of Bing Crosby's "White Christmas". The Rural tea was more enjoyable after this "work out".Diane Mark gave the vote of thanks to the demonstrators she also thanked hostesses Audrey Proctor and Jean Mark for supplying a lovely tea. After this the official business was conducted, this included a letter of thanks for donations to the Archie Foundation. We were surprised to learn that Botriphnie Rural members have contributed £600 in three years to this worthwhile cause.
Lorna Milne gave a report on the meeting of the Banffshire Federation held in the North Church Hall, Keith on 29 Nov 2003. She reported that one of Botriphnie Rural members, Davina Gray, is to be congratulated as she has been awarded the Evelyn Baxter Scholarship 2004. Only two WRI members are appointed annually in Scotland. Davina will be given instruction on the art of "Calico Gardens" which is a type of 3D embroidery, on calico, using only cream threads. During 2005, Davina, in turn will cascade her ideas and new skills to other rural members throughout the area. Agnes Riach closed the meeting by wishing us all a happy Christmas. The next meeting will be held in Botriphnie School at 7.30pm on 14 Jan 2004, when Dave McWilliam will be introducing us to the Drummuir Website and the Internet.

After conducting the business Mrs Riach introduced the speaker Dave McWilliam who gave a clear and interesting video presentation on the history and development of the World Wide Web. He also demonstrated what is involved in setting up a website with the emphasis on Drummuir's own website - www.botriphnie.org Dave had set up individual c.d.'s and the next hour was spent exploring the material & photographs about the village and inhabitants, creating much interest and comment. More material from all sources is needed to expand the site and Dave explained that written, audio and photographs could all be utilized to this end.

Monthly Report. February 2004.
Botriphnie WRI
Agnes Riach, President, who welcomed another excellent turnout of members and guests, chaired the February meeting of Botriphnie W.R.I. After conducting the business Mrs Riach introduced the speaker, one of our own Rural members, Lindsay Watt, who gave a fascinating demonstration of pottery. Lindsay, who is largely self-taught, initially started to learn this art as a teenager at evening classes.
She demonstrated the various methods of adding patterns and colours with paints and transfers, then using a tea towel and a rolling pin she showed how to roll out the base for a model. The base was cut to size with a knife and was likened to working with pastry. A large variety and range of clays can be used but Lindsay prefers to work with textured clay and continued slowly building up the model of a dog using her fingers moistened to keep the clay damp. The body of the dog was fashioned round crumpled paper, which burns off during the firing process to leave a hollow centre. The finished article has to dry out completely before being fired and Lindsay had brought along samples of her work ranging from a gorilla to a little model house.
Irene Christie gave the vote of thanks to Lindsay for a very talented and enjoyable demonstration; she also thanked hostesses Jill Wells and Diane Mark for supplying a lovely tea.
Botriphnie WRI will be supplying the refreshments at The Drummuir 21, Community Day & 4th AGM to be held in Botriphnie Primary School on Saturday 28 February 2004 from 10am. There will be displays by KDRA, Loch Park Rural Skills and Keith Heritage Group etc. (see enc, poster for details if required.) All welcome.

Botriphnie WRI
Agnes Riach, President, welcomed members to the March meeting of Botriphnie W.R.I. and introduced the speaker, John Rennie. The theme was 'Coastal Heritage' as John took us on an interesting and informative journey, illustrated with slides, along the North East Coast from Crovie to Cullen tracing out the route of the old King's Road.
John pointed out several lovely walks in the area, where all kinds of wildlife can be seen, on land, foxes, deer and rabbits etc; from cliff, birdlife such as kittiwakes, and gannets; and out to sea, seals and dolphins. In springtime the wild flowers can be appreciated. Many of the harbours along the route are centuries old and built of stone e.g. the old harbour at Portsoy is more than 300 years old. While at Cullen, pine trees were cut down and used, beneath the stone harbour, to give a firm foundation on the sandy soil The whole area is steeped in history and John pointed out many features of the old castles and buildings that are still evident today. The Ogilvie coat of arms for instance can still be seen on the old church at Deskford.
Audrey Peddie gave the vote of thanks to the speaker and also to the hostess, Mary Stewart for supplying a lovely tea.
Competition Winners:
Pot of Bulbs: 1st Agnes Riach. 2nd Davina Gray 3rd Joey Law.
Toddler's Jumper D.K.: 1st Dot Bremner 2nd Joey Law, 3rd Agnes Riach.

Botriphnie WRI
Agnes Riach, President, welcomed members from Auchindoun, Glass & Edinville
Rurals to the April meeting of Botriphnie W.R.I. She then introduced the
speaker, Irene Addison. from 'Just' bodycare. The theme was 'Herb Products for
Health' as Irene, with her twin sister Avril Bowie introduced us to various
herbal preparations used to help relieve health problems in a natural way.
A short video presentation showed that 'Just' as a company was established in Switzerland 70 years ago and is now in 32 countries, with around 350 employees. They have been in the U.K for around 7 years. Irene started using their products 10 years ago.
A comprehensive listing of all the different lotions, creams and oils with their recommended uses for treating complaints and ailments was circulated. Various samples were also passed round while Irene explained how they were used for maximum benefit. For instance, a 15-minute bath with water heat at body temperature allows the skin to absorb the herb most efficiently for the best effect. She gave us a general guide on the benefits of a variety of herbs e.g.; juniper for circulation; marigold to sooth sunburn; tea tree for fungal infection and lavender as a great healer. Irene and Avril finished their presentation by giving individual members specific advice on their particular problems.
Agnes Riach gave the vote of thanks to the speaker and also to the hostesses Wendy Cassidy, Laura Cassidy, Suzanne Lake and Grace Cox for supplying a lovely tea. Nan Shepherd from Auchindoun Rural gave thanks on behalf of the visiting WRIs.
Competition Winners:

At the first meeting of the new session, Mrs Agnes Riach, President welcomed an excellent turn out of members and guests. She then introduced the speaker, Alyson Lilleyman, who gave a demonstration of cold porcelain.
This craft resembles sugar craft but produces a more durable product, which can then be used as cake decoration, brides' bouquets or table decorations etc. Many of Alyson's decorations are sent by post mainly to the South of England so they need to be robust. We watched fascinated, as Alyson rolled out and assembled a beautiful fragile-looking rose. She showed us how to make leaves and a thistle and how to add colour using food dyes and petal dust. Confectioner's varnish can be used to add a gloss. The colourings etc need to be edible because they are used for example for the top of bridal or christening cakes. What started out as a hobby for Alyson, when she came out of the RAF, married and had two children, has become a business, which she enjoys. Her orders come through her website, from trade exhibitions but mainly through 'word or mouth'.
Lindsay Watt thanked Alyson for an interesting demonstration, which produced such beautiful goods. She also thanked the hostesses, Mrs Joey Law and Mrs Dianne Mark for providing a lovely tea.
Competition Winners:
Heather Buttonhole: 1st Mrs Davina Gray. 2nd Mrs Wendy Cassidy. 3rd Mrs Margaret Christie.
Headband for Party: 1st Mrs Audrey Proctor. 2nd Mrs Davina Gray 3rd Mrs Dot Bremner.
At our next meeting we are celebrating the 75th birthday of Botriphnie WRI with a party in Drummuir Village Hall. Members are reminded that this will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday 6th October 2004 and that optional dress will be in the style worn in 1929 when the Rural started.

There was a 100% turn out of members dressed mainly a la 1929 style who were welcomed by President, Mrs Agnes Riach, to Botriphnie WRI's 75th birthday celebrations. Mrs Jennifer Durno who is a member of Forglen supplied the lovely buffet meal. Jennifer started off her cooking career in the rural by taking her housewife and judges courses which led to her becoming a school cook and she now runs her own catering company, A & J Catering. The two longest serving members of the rural, Mrs Davina Gray and Mrs Joey Law cut the birthday cake, then Mrs Riach thanked Jennifer for laying on such a beautiful meal.
After the meal, members provided their own entertainment with a Ceilidh. The Botriphnie Orchestra set the tone on kazoos, keyboard, guitar, recorder, but mainly, combs & paper and the rest of the members joined by singing -a-long. Mrs Joey Law, Mrs Margaret McKay, Mrs Lindsay Watt and Mrs Davina Gray gave four very different but hilarious recitations. In between, Mrs Dot Bremner taught the members The Charleston and, with Mrs Davina Gray, demonstrated a Ragtime dance routine. Mrs Dianne Mark, playing guitar, allowed us to exercise our vocal chords again and our brains were exercised by two quizzes compiled by Mrs Lorna Milne. The winner of the Scottish Quiz was Mrs Margaret Christie, while Mrs Irene Christie won the domestic quiz.
Competitions:
WRI 75th Anniversary Card: 1st Mrs Lindsay Watt. 2nd Mrs Audrey Proctor. 3rd Mrs Mary Stewart.
Verse in the Card: 1st Mrs Lindsay Watt. 2nd Mrs Dot Bremner 3rd Mrs Wendy Cassidy.

Monthly Report. November 2004.
President, Mrs Agnes Riach, welcomed a good turn out of members and visitors to Botriphnie WRI's November meeting. She congratulated Mrs Lorna Milne on achieving 1st class for preserves and honours for a cold meal in the WRI Housewives Tests. Mrs Riach then informed us that the rural had raised £317 from the sale of teas & home bakes at Drummuir Castle Garden open day. It was decided to divide this between two charities, the Anthony Nolan Fund, Aberdeen and the Heart Unit at Elgin. The President then introduced the speaker for the night, Hazel Buxton of Hazel's Hats.
Hazel started her business in Huntly four years ago. She makes and hires out hats and fascinators for that special occasion. She has around 200 hats available. Fascinators, (small headpieces usually secured with a comb) have almost taken over from conventional hats. Their increased popularity is due to Victoria Beckham's example and their appearance in T.V. soap opera weddings. Hazel's hats are all hand sewn and made from material called 'Sinomay', which comes from banana leaves. Her husband, Dominique, helps in the business, by making the blocks for the hats. Hazel also makes the trimmings using materials such as ostrich feathers and dyes the hats to match each outfit giving a unique product. She brought along a selection of hats for us to try, showing us first how hats should be worn. Mrs Grace Cox thanked Hazel for giving an interesting and enlightening talk.
Mrs Isobel Eckersley, a visitor from Arradoul WRI, then issued an invitation to a craft exhibition to be held on Saturday & Sunday 27 & 28 November from 12-5pm in Arradoul Hall. Teas will be served cost £2. All welcome.

President, Mrs Agnes Riach, welcomed members to Botriphnie WRI's December meeting and after conducting the business she introduced the speaker, one of our own members, Mrs Audrey Proctor who was giving a talk on kilt making.
Audrey was brought up in Hopeman and moved to Knockando when she married. She then spent 10 years in Islay and when she moved back to the North East area attended the Keith Kilt School (the only kilt making school in the world). She told us the history of the kilt dating back to 325AD when it was worn originally tied round the waist with a swathe of the material over the shoulder. At night the kilt became a blanket for warmth. Nowadays, the film 'Brave Heart', has increased the popularity of the kilt, and young and old alike enjoy wearing the tartan.
There are now over 3,000 different tartans from all over the world and the tartans used in kilt making are all 100% wool. Each kilt takes 8-9 yards of material in one of three different weights. Audrey demonstrated how she starts with the front apron and using very strong thread sews each kilt by hand taking at least a minimum of two days to complete. She had also brought along books of different tartans and the information to allow us to trace our own tartan. Kilts in various stages of completion were passed around for inspection; Mrs Jill Wells thanked Audrey for giving such an interesting & informative demonstration.

President, Mrs Agnes Riach, welcomed members and guests to Botriphnie WRI’s January meeting and after conducting the business she introduced the speaker, our own secretary, Mrs Davina Gray, who was giving a ‘hands on’ demonstration of Iris Folding.
The art of Iris Folding is environmentally friendly, as attractive greetings cards can be made using envelopes from junk mail and used wrapping paper etc. Davina explained that the name comes from the shiny bit of the eye - the iris - each design has a focal point resembling this, and folded paper is used to achieve this effect. She had taken along many lovely examples to show the finished articles in a variety of designs, all achieved basically using one inch strips of folded paper or ribbon. Using a blank card with an aperture cut in the centre and a numbered design, Davina demonstrated how to tape the strips, folded lengthwise on to the card. Silence reigned (uncharacteristically), as we were all totally engrossed with the task in hand. The cards were finished with a stick on ‘thank you’ message in gold or silver to match the design. The evening was voted a great success with a request for a card making session to be held sometime before next Christmas to allow members to design and make their own personal cards.

Monthly Report. February 2005.
President, Mrs Agnes Riach, welcomed an excellent turn out of members and guests to Botriphnie WRI’s February meeting and after conducting the business she also finalised the arrangements for the Drummuir 21 Open Day, an annual event, to be held this year in Botriphnie School, on Saturday 26 February 10am-12noon. The W.R.I will be doing the catering and everyone is welcome. Mrs Riach then introduced the speaker, Anne Johnson, who was giving a ‘hands on’ demonstration of water colour painting
Mrs Johnson started by showing us the various techniques and types of materials used in watercolours. Brushes, for instance, come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and range from brushes made with hair or synthetic fibres, to the very expensive sable brushes. The type of paper used is also important and the best results can be achieved by using the correct heavy weight watercolour paper.
We watched fascinated, as the artist demonstrated the painting of a tree, with the sky above, and then a very detailed example of red berries on a twig. All this time she talked us through the art of wetting the paper first to help to create shades and give a soft edge and how to use water to lighten shades, instead of white paint. She showed us how to use lighter shades to give distance to an object and darker colours to bring it to the foreground. Then we were let loose with paintbrushes to create our own works of art, with varying degrees of success.
Mrs Davina Gray gave the vote of thanks to Mrs Johnson, for a very enjoyable fun demonstration, which gave us an initiation into the art of painting. She also thanked the hostesses Mrs Grace Cox and Mrs M Christie for the lovely tea.

President, Mrs Agnes Riach, welcomed a good turn out of members and guests to Botriphnie WRI’s March meeting and after conducting the business she then introduced Line Dancing teacher, Mrs Sheila Smith, who with Mrs Cristieen Shand was to put us through our paces.
Sheila & Cristieen demonstrated the steps slowly at first before putting on the music. The first dance we attempted, with varying degrees of success, was the Lindy Shuffle, then we formed a long line for the Virginia Reel and this was followed by a dance called Old Soldier. To allow us to have a break and catch our breath, Sheila and Cristieen demonstrated very complicated routine. We joined in again to try to master a dance called Sweet Talk.

President, Mrs Agnes Riach, welcomed an almost 100% turn out of members to Botriphnie WRI’s April meeting and after conducting the business she continued by congratulating Mrs Davina Gray, who has successfully gained a 1st class pass for canvas work in the SWRI Handicrafts Test. The President then introduced the speaker, Mrs Mary Chalmers, whose topic was ‘Jam/Chutney, My Business’
Mary started her business making home made preserves, six years ago, and although she gave up this business last year, she made many friends and learned a lot about the difficulties associated with the production of food for resale to the public. She explained that the jars she used were of a uniform 12 oz. size, with colour coded lids to separate the sweet from the savoury. The labeling had to conform to the regulations, giving details such as, name, type of product, ingredients with percentages, best before date etc.
Mary passed on many tips like sealing jars when the contents are hot and using frozen fruit to make jam. As a bonus the speaker then gave us a cookery demonstration making first a simple vegetable soup with oatmeal and cheese added, which she called Deveron Soup. Then she made two fillings for Tortillas followed by a blini snack filled with ham and cheese.
Mrs Riach gave the vote of thanks to the speaker for a most enjoyable demonstration and she also thanked the hostesses, Mrs Margaret Mackay and Mrs Mary Stewart for a beautiful tea.
