About 1978 a group of young people working on a Youth Opportunities Programme recorded all the gravestone inscriptions in Moray. Many of the stones were very difficult to read, sometimes due to the type of stone used, sometimes to the build-up of algae and lichen, sometimes because the stones were partially or completely buried and sometimes because they were so unstable as to be dangerous. In 2004, the Moray Burial Research Group, under the leadership of Bruce Bishop and working in co-operation with the Council for Scottish Archaeology and the Scottish Association of Family History Societies, carried out a detailed program of recording to correct and update the list. We are deeply indebted to all these for carrying out the work and then allowing us to present them on this website.

The gravestone numbering system used consists of the prefix Bt (for Botriphnie) followed by a number that simply identifies each headstone as shown in the accompanying gravestone plan. Note that the headstone numbers are quite separate from the numbers of the lairs on which they stand. Where known, the lair numbers are given after the headstone numbers. Lairs were usually purchased in groups and it is the whole group that  is usually referred to.

Note also that the Record Book recording the burials taking place before 1899 has been lost but the information on who purchased the lairs was carried forward to the later books. Because of this, the only record of the earlier burials is on the gravestones themselves. Of course, in many cases no gravestone was erected so we sometimes get the situation where a family purchased a number of lairs and no record exists of them having been used.

This stone is erected by PETER MILNE after a residence of 23 years in the West Indies in commemoration of his affection to his beloved mother, brothers and sisters, viz; HELEN MITCHELL, late wife of ALEXANDER MILNE, Maltkiln, Mortlach, who departed this life 19th day of June 1838 in the 73rd year of her age, ROBERT, eldest brother, who died 28th day of June 1828 in the 35th year of his age. MARY, eldest sister, who died 17th day of April 1822 in the 25th year of her age. JAMES, younger brother, died 13th day of May 1837 in the 35th year of his age. The above PETER MILNE Esqr., the erector of this stone, died Barbados 11th day of February 1818 aged 30 years. ALEXANDER MILNE, Maltkiln, died 11th of March 1851 aged 86 years. HELEN MILNE died 3rd Feberuary (sic) 1837 aged 8. GEORGE M. MILNE died the 11th of Feberuary (sic) 1863 aged 28. JANE MILNE died the 19th January 1864 aged 31 years. ALEXANDER MILNE, son of ALEX^R MILNE, late of Maltkiln died at the Fife Arms Hotel, Dufftown 28th day of May 1871 aged 65 years. The three names immediately before this were of this family also and of his spouse JANE GRANT, who died 18th January 1881 aged 80 years. This humble monument erected the 12 day of August 1839.

Also JANNET ORD wife of WILLIAM LORIMER who died 16th June 1805 aged 69 years. The fore said WILIAM LORIMER died Midtown of Bellyhack Febr^y 1816 aged 75 years. To perpetuate the memory of the best of relations this stone is placed here by WILLIAM LORIMER, farmer in Midtown of Bellyhack 16th March 1807.

The first part of this inscription is recorded from the 1978 Survey, being now inaccessible. The second half was read as part of current Survey.
First section.
Near this stone was buried the body of PETER McPHAIL 1709, and also the body of his son GEORGE McPHAIL, 1774, in the 67th year of his age. Also the body of GEORGE McPHAIL, son of the above GEORGE, 1818, in the 69th year of his age.
Second section.
Here likewise lies ROBERT McPHAIL (son of the within GEORGE McPHAIL, senr.) Blacksmith in Nova Scotia 36 years, who died at Cachenhead 8th March 1835 aged 78.

And of their children MARGT., JANE, GEORGE and ISABELLA who died in infancy. The above THOMAS WILSON who was for 30 years Schoolmaster at Raws died there 14th November 1865 aged 71 years and is also interred here.

This monument is erected by JOHN STUART in Rosarie in memory of his grandfather WILLIAM and his father THOMAS who both lived and died in Boddinfinnich and of his uncle HENDRY who sometime lived and died in Rosarie. JOHN, WILLIAM, ALEXR., GEORGE, HENDRY MARGT., & BEATRIX, HENDRY's children also lie here. It is to be observed that this has been the burial place of the said STUARTS long before & ever since the Reformation.

He is buried in Rue du Bois Military Cemetery, Bethune. "Yea though I walk through the valley of the Shadow of Death, I will fear no evil for Thou art with me".
At base of memorial plaque is what appears to be the cross-piece of a simple wooden grave marker, which may have been retrieved from France, and which reads;

Sacred in the memory of the Rev. ALEXANDER ANGUS, Minister of this Parish, and his affectionate spouse KATHARINE MAIR. He died 11th April 1829 in his 85th years and 55th of his useful ministry, she died 26th October 1836 in her 86th year.
"Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, from henceforth, yea, saith the spirit, that they may rest from their labours, and their works do follow them" Rev. XIV.13.
Of their predeceased children;
ALEXANDER died in Demerara 29th Sept. 1802 aged 16, MARTHA died here 20th April 1807 aged 23, MARY died here 16th March 1808 aged 22, FRANCES HELEN died here 9th May 1812 aged 19, JOHN died at Calcutta 6th July 1822 aged 44, ELIZABETH died here 26th June 1828 aged 49. And five children and three grandchildren died in infancy.
JANE died at Alford 7th August 1867 aged 78, GEORGE died at Aberdeen 7th April 1872 aged 78.
The remains of all these are deposited in the aisle in the churchyard, except those of the two sons.
